National Security Educational Program
David L. Boren Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarships
http://www.iie.org/programs/nsep/default.htm
PURPOSE
The NSEP Boren scholarships offer opportunities for students to study
regions of the world that are critical to U.S. interests (including
Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and
the Middle East). The NSEP's interest in national security
encompasses all
challenges related to global society—sustainable development,
environmental degradation, global disease, hunger, population
growth, migration and economic competitiveness.
PROGRAMS
The Boren Undergraduate Scholarships provide support for
students to study abroad (excluding Canada, New Zealand, Australia,
and the countries of Western Europe). Language study is a major
component where less-commonly studied language are of particular
interest. On some
occasions study of French and Spanish is supported, but only at
advanced levels. Students participating in Pepperdine's Buenos Aires
programs will not be competitive unless they are advanced in Spanish
proficiency and majoring in the sciences, business or engineering.
Recipients of the undergraduate scholarship incur a one-year
obligation to work in the federal government.
The Boren Graduate Fellowships provide
support to graduates who are pursuing the study of languages,
cultures and world regions that are critical to the U.S. The
fellowship awards are made for a minimum of one semester and a
maximum of two academic years. Support applies to overseas study,
domestic study or a combination of both. Recipients of the graduate
scholarship also incur a service requirement between two and three
years depending on the length of time the recipient is funded.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and be willing to enter a
service agreement for employment with an agency or office of
the federal government involved in national security affairs
following their return. As stated, U.S. undergraduates in their first
through third year of study may apply for the Undergraduate
Scholarships and will incur a 12 month service requirement.
Graduate students enrolled in programs may apply for funds for the
international component of their degrees and will incur a service
requirement equal to the time funded.
SELECTION
Boren scholarships are merit-based. Generally, students
participating in one of Pepperdine's international programs will not
be competitive for the undergraduate scholarship. Participants
in the Shanghai program and the Buenos Aires program may be
eligible. Students
engaging in intensive language study through another program may be
competitive.
