Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

http://www.iie.org//programs/gilman/index.html

PURPOSE

Congressionally funded and sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Program broadens the student population that studies abroad by supporting undergraduate students who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints.

PROGRAMS

The Gilman International Scholarship awards over 700 scholarships of up to $5,000 for undergraduates to study abroad. Funds may be applied to tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance and international airfare. Award amounts vary depending on the length of study and student need. Students who are awarded the Gilman International Scholarship are eligible to receive an additional Critical Need Language Supplement for languages less commonly studied (particular dialects among the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, Turkic, Persian, Indic, Korean or Russian).

ELIGIBILITY

U.S. citizens who are undergraduates and are in good academic standing are eligible to apply. Additionally, students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant. Students planning to participate in summer programs are not eligible.

SELECTION

The Gilman Scholarship aims to support candidates who have been traditionally underrepresented in study abroad, including, but not limited to students with high financial need, community college students, students in under-represented fields (sciences and engineering), students with diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with disabilities. The program also aims to support students who will study in non-traditional destinations (outside of Western Europe and Australia). View the website for further information on selection criteria.
